Back to River City

As a theatre enthusiast and performer, one of the most fulfilling aspects of any production is the sense of community that forms both on and off the stage. And tonight, as I step back into the role of Mayor Shinn for the understudy performance of The Music Man, I’m reminded of how much this show has meant to me—and how deeply this cast and crew have become a part of my life.

For those not familiar with theatre life, understudy performances are a unique and exciting part of any production. Some of the leads move to ensemble roles, and the understudy steps in to bring the character to life. There is no understudy for Mayor Shinn. I once again have the privilege of playing the blustering, pompous, and sometimes goofy character. And while the role itself is fun, the real magic comes from the connections you form with your fellow castmates and the audience.

One of the things that has stood out most about this production is the overwhelming sense of support and camaraderie that fills the air backstage. From the moment I joined the cast, my family and I were welcomed with open arms. It’s not just about performing a show; it’s about creating a sense of belonging. It’s a reminder that theatre is about more than just the art—it’s about the people, the relationships, and the collective commitment to telling a story.

I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside some truly incredible people, and the talent on stage every night is nothing short of inspiring. They are what make this show the success that it is. Watching them give it their all each night, tweaking performances, running lines, or brainstorming creative ideas to elevate the show is what makes this community so special. It’s a reminder that theatre is about collaboration, about pushing one another to bring our best selves to the table.

A huge part of this experience has been the sense of family and encouragement that runs through every aspect of this production. From Jason Bilow, who leads cast cheers and keeps everyone’s spirits high, to the veterans like Andrew Scott, Emily Jane Mew, Scott Mountain, and Jennifer Lynn Mountain, whose wisdom and kindness have been an invaluable part of this journey. Their consistent encouragement has been a constant reminder of why I love this art form.

Of course, one of the best parts has been seeing my kids experience the magic of the theatre, and witnessing how kind and welcoming everyone has been to them. The joy they get from performing in each show has been inspiring. I’ll cherish it forever.

This run of The Music Man has been a special one, and I am beyond grateful to be part of it. I’ve loved stepping into the shoes of Mayor Shinn, playing off some of the most talented people I know, and being part of a production that’s full of heart, humor, and passion.

If you’re in the Cambridge area this weekend, I invite you to join us for a performance and experience the music, dance, and magic of The Music Man for yourself. Whether you're a lifelong theatre lover or a first-time attendee, there’s something about live performance that’s truly spellbinding.

I’ll be there, and I can’t wait to share this incredible experience with all of you.
