People always ask, “What is the Spicer family’s next show?”
Well, 2026 is already filling up rapidly.
Since theatre has been such a big part of my life for the last three years, I wanted to list my five favourite roles/shows so far. I’m sure this list will change by the end of 2026, because there are some very fun ones already lined up.
1. Mayor Shinn – The Music Man
Mayor Shinn is the kind of role I love: big, loud, goofy, and fun. But he also had nuance, and I really enjoyed finding those subtler moments of heart and vulnerability. It was also the biggest role I’ve had so far (it is the third largest part in the musical) and pivotal in setting the tone and driving the narrative whenever he was on stage.
It was a great challenge, and I truly appreciated how much flexibility I was given in defining him. Plus, it was wonderful playing alongside Catherine Seifried Weddel, Jessy Morgan Davies and Julia Galvao as my Shinn family. Everett rocked it as Winthrop, Emily was a great Pick-a-Little Lady, and Danika brought her charm as always.
2. Mr. Beaver – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
This cast will always be special to me. It was packed with incredible talent and not a whiff of ego; it truly felt like a team. Unleashing my energy and leaning into the comedy as Mr. Beaver was a constant blast.
Playing opposite Emily was pure magic; we clearly had great chemistry to the point that some audience members thought we should start dating in real life (too late).
I’m still touched that on a few nights, we received standing ovations when we came out for bows. But a great performance only happens because of the amazing performers you get to play off of, and this cast was something special.
I also loved how many kids wanted to “take Mr. Beaver home,” though they probably would have been disappointed to discover he was just a cranky, achy middle-aged man.
3. Earthworm / Aunt Spiker – James and the Giant Peach
One of my favourite children’s books, and two very different characters that were a blast to play. I loved making Earthworm melodramatic and balancing Aunt Spiker as both villainous and comedic in her vanity and stupidity. Of course, this show ranks high because I had a proud dad moment seeing Everett shine in the lead role.
It was wonderful working with Richard Ouellette, who was such a joy to play off, and Sadia Malik, my fantastic “stage girlfriend.” Because it was a more intimate show, we really bonded during rehearsals.
4. VBS Skits
Not community theatre, but a series of four skits that I wrote and then performed with my family. I played a puppet, but crafting the entire skits and playing a unique role pushed me creatively in a completely different way. All four shows were hits with both kids and adults.
5. Clarence/Mr Potter//Billy/Bert/Peter/Others - It’s a Wonderful Life – Live Radio Stage
I didn’t expect to include this one, but I loved how much it challenged me. I voiced eight-plus characters, and had at least two scenes where my characters were talking to each other. I loved needing to make every voice distinct while driving the energy of the scene, and I pulled it off, and I loved doing something so unique.
What I’ve learned over the past few years is that I don’t care much about landing a lead. What I love is taking on fun, unique roles where I can fully immerse myself and try new things on stage.
I know I’ll get more of that in 2026, and I can’t wait to discover what ends up being my next favourite performance.
