Movie Review Game Plan

I mentioned how, despite September being over half over and 2026 closer to being done than started, I'll still try to cobble together some type of respectable end-of-the-year list. While that is not wiped off the agenda, I'm also well aware I haven't done a Best of the Year in any form since 2022, and a lot of that has to do with my awful job of staying on top of the latest movies in the past few years. Definitely not anywhere close to the 2010s, when I was reviewing between 100 and 200 movies in a year.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get back to that level, as I have many things I want to write about, including older movies and fiction, and right now I need significant freelance work to keep the lights on, but I am aiming to review new releases on a much more regular basis. I have missed some rather significant movies in the past several years, and would like to resolve that issue. In the next few months, my goal is to cover some new releases, but also finally get around to reviewing some movies that really should have got my attention a few years ago.

I'm supposed to be a film critic, and my friends still turn to me for my thoughts and recommendations. Yet, I've missed more movies since 2024 than I've seen, and I'd like that not to be the reality in the coming year.

I am also well aware of my struggle with an 'all-or-nothing' mentality. So, I also know that I'm not going to fix this very quickly. It will be something I resolve over time, or maybe never. But I'll hopefully catch and review quite a few great missed movies over time.

And also make sure I don't keep missing great movies going forward. Well, finances and time say I'll still miss quite a few, but hopefully I'll catch a lot more than absolutely none like I've been doing the past few years.

The movie critic hat is coming back on. That means some movies in 2026, but also movies from the past few years that deserve a Spicer-style review too.

Hopefully, you enjoy them all in whatever form they come.
