As I struggled through burnout and tried to meet neurotypical standards, I damaged some working relationships by missing deadlines or not properly grasping expectations. In some cases, I was contracted with companies that were definitely exploitative, with high expectations and pay rates that offered less than a Sandwich Artist.
But I also blew beneficial relationships, and in all cases, likely damaged what could have been advantageous references. So, here I am, in desperate need of work with no past clients or editors I can possibly leverage to aid in finding more work. This isn't entirely the truth, but it is how my brain perceives it. Even with work where things ended well, I keep thinking they'd seek me out for a new article if I was really that good.
I am also well aware that I'm not toxic. I'm someone who has struggled with mental health. A neurodivergent creator who, for decades, believed he was broken. Someone passionate about creating and telling stories, and who has been told many times he is talented.
It is just time to start rewriting my story. Rebuilding relationships and creating a reputation that grows my audience and builds trust among those with pull in the creative markets.
This isn't the end. It isn't a new beginning. It is just the latest chapter. One that I have the power to tell, even if there will be twists, turns, heartbreak, and obstacles. My story so far says there are also victories, and it is up to me to decide what to do with those moments next.

I am a writer, so I write. When I am not writing, I will eat candy, drink beer, and destroy small villages.
