Publishing Future

About 10 years ago, I was warned against self-publishing, because once you've done it, traditional publishing avoids you like it is 2020 all over again. But getting traditionally published without any prior sales often means you're ignored, or you get an advance that could possibly buy you a Starbucks drink if lucky.  But to achieve any form of livable sales as a self-publisher likely means dropping several tens of thousands of dollars or very significant full-time work hours in marketing, promotion, editing, formatting, and cover design.

It has gotten even more challenging in 2026. Part of me feels like I dropped the ball way back in 2010, when times had changed even then, but with AI and giant conglomerations buying up everything now, it has become far more challenging.

What does it mean?

Well, first off, I need to be gentle with myself. In 2010, I didn't realize that undiagnosed AuDHD and burnout would lead to a lot of what I defined as self-sabotage over the past decade and a half. Despite that, I still grew a respectable audience.

While it is unlikely, I will become a millionaire just off this site. Or just off my newsletter. Or just off freelance work. Or just off the podcast. Or just off publishing novels or books. There are still opportunities to create and follow things I am passionate about. Combining all these projects along with other opportunities, I may still be able to pay the bills and support my family in some way.

I also admit I'm still trying to figure out this whole crazy world of publishing and freelancing as it stands in the ever-changing 2026.
