As a freelance film critic, I have no big industry backing and no consistent work, and I am deeply relying on my site and other projects to grow an audience that somehow becomes monetized. It can be scary to bite the hand that feeds you when it comes to being offered screeners for movies I don't like. I want to be honest, but I also don't want to lose connections because I panned a work.
My hope is that with honest but fair reviews, even when not recommending a work, I can build trust and not sever relationships that could be paramount to my growth.
