Beyond the Balcony

The movie theatres are opening up again in Ontario, so that means that for the first time since March that we are reviewing some theatrical releases. This includes an animated adventure that isn't coming to the United States until next year but is the big new release in Canada in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. The other theatrical release is the Russel Crowe starring thriller, Unhinged . We also review two 2020 movies that are streaming on Netflix including the Jamie Foxx starring twist on the superhero genre mixed with police procedural in Project Power and a different take on the romantic teen comedy with Banana Split . Plus, we look at talented female directors like Olivia Wilde and Nia DaCosta being hired to helm big tentpoles and discuss if this is true change in Hollywood or just a fad. There is Nothing Strange About the World of Awesome Discovered in This Birthday Cake

Danika recently had her birthday , which means after a two year Covid forced hiatus, she finally got to have a birthday party. And a birthday combined with a party means Emily works her magic and makes our kids an incredible cake. This year the theme is Strange World , which was an underseen but incredibly fun Disney animated adventure movie clearly inspired by Jules Verne and 1940s adventure serials. The movie was extra special, because Danika and I saw it together in theatres, and she whispered to me several times during the screening that she really liked it. Theatre Ancaster's 'Newsies Jr' Proves the Magic and Value of the Arts

'Seize the day.' Famous uplifting words used many times in history, but also a significant line and music number in Newsies. A musical loosely based on the real1899 strike of the child newspaper sellers in New York (what were they called, I wonder). It is an inspirational story about kids who are ignored and mistreated by society, but despite where they are perceived on the social ladder, they make a major cultural impact when they band together and take a huge risk on improving their pay and treatment. You could say, they seized the day (or days, because it wasn't a 24-hour affair.). I felt the magic of inspiration and motivation when watching the high-caliber Theatre Ancaster production of Newsies Jr last Saturday. I thought a lot about the idea of seizing the moment and how the underdog can rise above when they dare to take that chance.
