The Magical First Weekend of The Music Man

And the Bittersweet Monday That Follows

The curtain has fallen on our first weekend of The Music Man, and I’m still riding the wave of joy, adrenaline, and that indescribable theatre magic that comes from a truly special show.

 And now... it’s Monday.

No call times.

No costumes.

No booming “FOUR SCORE!” slipping out at inopportune moments (although, let’s be honest, that might still happen at the grocery store).

The stage is quiet—for now—and I find myself already missing the band, the cast, the directors… the whole beautiful chaos of live theatre. Luckily, this isn’t a goodbye. It’s just a brief intermission.

We’re back on stage this Thursday for four more performances, including our special understudy show, and Everett—my brilliant son—returns as Winthrop for Friday and Saturday’s performances.

This whole experience has been nothing short of spellbinding. As Mayor Shinn, I’ve had the honor of playing the town's most blustery windbag, and it’s been deeply moving to hear how many audience members (and castmates!) have enjoyed my interpretation. As someone who’s spent much of life feeling like the odd one out, it’s hard to express just how much it means to feel seen, appreciated, and—dare I say it—celebrated.

This cast has been one of the most welcoming and supportive groups I’ve ever been a part of. And speaking of celebration, I am beyond proud of Everett. Watching him shine on stage as Winthrop fills me with awe. He’s handled the role with depth, charm, and a quiet confidence that makes my heart swell. Sharing this production with him has been one of the highlights of my year—and quite possibly, my life. And of course, my lovely ladies—Danika and Emily Spicer—continue to light up the stage with their signature charisma, humor, and heart.

Our family’s shared love of theatre has never felt more vibrant. This show simply wouldn’t work without the dedication, heart, and passion of every single cast and crew member. Each of you brings something irreplaceable to the stage. I already miss you—and I cannot wait to be back in the wings, waiting for that first cue.

If you haven’t seen the show yet, don’t miss it. The Music Man returns to Cambridge this weekend, and trust me—it’s something special. 🎟️ Grab your tickets here
