My Latest 'Life on the Balcony' Explores Roger Ebert's Lasting Legacy on My Writing

Anyone who has followed me for any length of time knows how big an influence Roger Ebert has been on me as a writer and critic. In the latest Life on the Balcony, I explore how his term “empathy machines” (which he used to describe movies) has become a compass for how I review and write about films in the newsletter and on this site.

I also share why I remain convinced that storytelling and art deeply matter to our society and culture. They help us better understand the world, form stronger connections with others, and provide one of the best ways to creatively critique the state of the world.

And, of course, it’s entertaining, which I hope my latest post proves. If you enjoy it, the most awesome thing ever would be if you considered subscribing. Thank you for your support!
